"It's Elemental" video project (Foundations of Chemistry)
Students created a 3-5 minute video about an element and submitted it to the Chemical Heritage Foundation's "It's Elemental" contest to celebrate 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry. Prizes are awarded to the most popular videos, and the best videos, as judged by a panel of professionals. Check out the Ephrata videos and vote for them under the following elements:
Helium (He) Calcium (Ca) Titanium (Ti) Molybdenum (Mo)
Sodium (Na) Manganese (Mn) Iron (Fe) Radon (Rn)
Strontium (Sr) Chromium (Cr) Gold (Au) Zinc (Zn)
Mercury (Hg) Aluminum (Al) Nitrogen (N) Uranium (U)
Californium (Cf)
Building Molecular Structures (Principles & Foundations of Chemistry)
Students built giant 3D structures of molecules to investigate the geometry of molecules and what makes them polar. Check out the pictures!
60-Second Science (Principles of Chemistry)
Students worked in groups to produce 60-second podcasts about a chemistry topic. Listen in!
Chemistry of Glazes (Principles of Chemistry)
Students made their own glazes and added chemical colorants to investigate the chemistry of color. Check out the samples.
Chemistry of Ozone (Foundations of Chemistry)
This is a multi-part unit involving the science of ozone. In the Chemical Formulas unit, students will investigate the structure and properties of ozone in the troposphere and the stratosphere. In the Chemical Equations unit, students will look into the involvement of tropospheric ozone in air pollution. For the remainder of the year, students will monitor the weather and ozone levels through data collected on campus. They will prepare a report showing which weather factors influence the formation of ozone.
